Multimedia Information Retrieval.

Pengenalan

Information retrieval(IR) is a field concerned with the structure, analysis, organisation, storage, searching and retrieval of information. IR, often regarded as being synonymous with document or text retrieval implies the task of retrieving documents with information content that is relevant to a user's information need. With current advancements in multimedia technologies, the information content is no longer confined to collections of text-based documents but of very diverse media such as images, video and audio. Various branches of media-specific IR research fields have emerged due to the challenges that are specific to the characteristics of these differing media, and the specialised domain knowledge required for developing modern-age IR systems. Integrating these media-specific and text-based technologies for an integrated Multimedia IR system would pose even further challenges.

Currently, several staff from the Department of Multimedia are working in either media-specific or text-based IR technologies, forming this Research group.
