Title : Computer Aided Orthopaedic Surgery Project detail : IRPA-EA no: 04-02-04-0496-EA001 Amount : RM 204,560.00 Period : 36 month Starting Date : Julai 2002 This study is focused on the decision support system (DSS) for assisting the orthopedic surgeon in determination of the best of the Cobb angle correction and the force to be used for rotating and straightening the deformed thoracic spine. The result of the study will provide a DSS for assisting the surgeon in determine the degree of the thoracic curve fixation, and also as a guide to reduce the failure of the scoliosis operation through the calculation of the force to be used for rotating the vertebrae, straightening the vertebrae, and the maximum degree to be corrected. Basically the system development will be separated into four phases: First Phase: Information Collection -the x-ray images will be collected from Hospital Kuala Lumpur and the interview with orthopedic surgeon will be done. Second Phase: 3D Backbone Simulation -Mainly focused on the 3D backbone simulation from two x-ray images that are taken from posteroanterior (P-A) and lateral view. -The edge will be joined from the perpendicular to simulate the 3D bone. The technique involves including noise eliminating, blending, smoothing, and texture mapping.Third Phase: Spine Fixation focused on the thoracic bone fixation. The thoracic vertebrae from T1 until T12 will be define their x, y, z coordinate accordingly at the middle of the vertebra. -The x, y, z coordinate will be selected from the middle of the vertebrae. ![]() ![]() -The surgeon will be asked to select the best location for placing the pedicle screws on the vertebrae. The hook will be installed base on the location that the surgeon has pre-selected. Fourth Phase: User Interface Design -The result can be used by the orthopedic surgeon to predict the best correction on the deformed spine thus to increase the reliability and obtain the best result of fixation. CAOS Computer Aided Orthopaedic Surgery The purpose Of The Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery Research group is to bring together those individuals throughout Malaysia, who, by their contributions and activities in the areas of research, clinical study, and use, technical activities have indicated or are indicating interest in computer assisted orthopedic surgery
The Research group aims to promote a new partnership between orthopedic surgeons and technologists as necessary basis for the successful integration of computer assisted surgical tools and techniques into the daily clinical routine. ![]()
CAOS will seek to accomplish these goals by holding a few related research and workshop and by disseminating information to it as an organization either at meeting or independently. By stimulating basic and clinical research, and by organizing postgraduate full time research the CAOS group hopefully can accomplish and assist the Universities in developing graduate and postgraduate teaching programs in this areas. The Group shall collaborate and co-operate with other associations and bodies whose efforts are directed at the same objective and whose interest are allied with or are similar to those of those of the Group itself. |
